Good-bye Pre K4 - Hello Summer!
It is hard to believe that this year is over.  The children have grown so much this year - I am proud of each and everyone of them!

This week we will be sending home their Pre K4 book.  Please have them read it to you.  Also being sent home is their alphabet book/journal, Religion Certificate and different supplies they brought from home.  Show and tell - the children can surprise us with anything they want to bring.  If your child has Show and Tell on Friday, they may bring in on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

Monday we will have ice pops and on Wednesday we will have our pizza party.

 Friday is our Move Up celebration which will be held at 10:00am.  Please bring your child to school at 9:30 and when Pre  K3 is done with their ceremony you may proceed into the gym.  After our ceremony we will have a slide presentation and refreshments in our classroom.  All children will be dismissed with their parents after the refreshments.  This is the last day of school for the children.

Thank you for all your help and support this past year.  Have a super summer!.

Talent Show 
The children did a great job today at the talent show!!  I was so proud of them!

Our Talented Children - 6/4 - 6/8
We start our week with our talent show.  Your child should be ready to perform for their classmates. No costumes are necessary - have your child wear their school uniform.  Also, I am sorry to say that the show will be for the children only, so no parents should attend. Thanks for understanding.

Also this week we will be finishing our PreK 4 book, reviewing what we have learned this year and practicing for our Move Up celebration.  Show and tell - your child can bring something related to summer.

All About Me! 5/29 - 6/1
I hope you all enjoyed your Memorial Day weekend.

The children had a great time at Field Day.  Thank you to all who came - it made the day extra special!

This week we will be working on our end of the year books, practicing for Move Up, reviewing the letter sounds and reviewing numbers to 30.  This past week we practiced writing different numbers to 100.  The children did a great job!  We also learned some sight words and will continue with these this week.  Show and tell - your child can bring in their favorite possession.  I will be talking to the class about  their talents this week and asking them what their talent is.  Next Monday, 6/4 we will have a class talent show - so practice with your child!

God Bless America - 5/21 - 5/25

With Memorial Day approaching and the 4th of July on the horizon what better time is it to learn about our country.  We will take a look at the various American symbols, learn about the different American holidays and discuss what it means to be an American. Of course we will also be singing all the patriotic songs we have learned this year. This week we will also be looking for some sight words in different books.  For show and tell your child can bring in anything that is red, white or blue.

Field Day - Friday, May 25th - 9:30am start - 1:00pm dismissal
Our class will begin Field Day at 9:30 (the older grades will begin at 9:00)  Field Day will take place at the filed across the street from St. Leo's.  Students do not need to bring backpacks.  Also please send disposable snack  (no lunch boxes or containers)  as we may be eating across the street.  Also please send extra water bottle (again disposable) with your child's name on it.  Lunch will be served at 11:30am at school.  Please make sure your child has on sunscreen and sneakers. All are invited to enjoy the day with the children. Dismissal is at 1:00pm.

What's in Your Garden? - 5/14 - 5/18
This week we will learn the parts of a plant,plant flowers to take home and discover all the things that are in our gardens.  We will also do some measuring with our bug rulers.  For show and tell your child can bring in something that relates to a garden.  

Please continue to have your child practice writing their letters and numbers.  I will be sending home a list of sight words we will begin to review.

As a class we enjoyed hearing about everyone's Bloomin' Good Books - the display outside our room is beautiful - look for a picture on our class photos. 

On Friday we released our butterflies at the St. Francis statue.  Coach took a video of the celebration - take a peek on St. Leo's Instagram site.

The Zoo - 5/7 - 5/12
All our activities this week will revolve around the zoo.  We will do zoo sounds, I spy the zoo and build bridges that will hold the animals. We will also be reviewing subtraction. On Monday we will attend a presentation called Earth Dome and Tuesday will be our trip to the zoo.  Show and tell - bring in something related to the zoo.  Last week the children showed us their beautiful mommies.  We have all the pictures hanging up in the classroom.  If your child did not bring in a picture send one in this week.  Please don't forget to send in the final home project 'Bloomin Good Books' tomorrow.

If you are meeting us at the zoo please see me at drop off on Tuesday as I will give you an itinerary and info for the day.  I think it would be nice for the children if we could explore the zoo as a class.We will meet at the zoo at 10:00.  Don't forget to pack a lunch with all disposable items.

HAPPY MOTHER"S DAY!!


Special Days in May 4/29 - 5/4
May is the month of Mary - this week and we will learn a song about Mary which we will sing all month and we will also bring flowers to the Mary statue.  Mother's Day is just around the corner so this week the children will be busy making their cards and gifts for mom.  Friday we will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with maracas and chips and salsa. We will continue working on our sounds, number words and color words.  We will also be reviewing addition.  Show and tell - have your child bring in a picture of their mom and be ready to tell the class 3 things about their mother.

I hope all the children are working on their 'Bloomin Good Book' project - please send in by Monday, 5/7.

Butterfly Life Cycle - 4/23 - 4/27

During the next several weeks our class will watch as caterpillars turn into butterflies. (Last Friday we received a container of live caterpillars).  This week we will learn the different stages of the butterfly life cycle.  We will also learn about symmetry as butterflies are symmetrical.  Since it appears that Spring may have finally arrived, for Show and Tell this week the children can bring in an item related to Spring.  We will be working on all the letter sounds and the number words 0-20.

On Monday your child will come home with the final family project.  If you have any questions, please email me.

Your child came home last week with flash cards for number words 11-20.  Please review at home. 

Please continue to count to 100 with your child and to review the alphabet sounds.

Earth Day/Environment - 4/16 - 20
This week we will take a look at what we need to do to protect the earth.  The children will learn the three R's (reduce, reuse, recycle) and start to understand how even as young as they are they can help the earth.  We will be reviewing our letter sounds and reviewing the number words for 11-20.  Show and tell - have your child bring in something they could recycle and tell us what and how they could recycle the object ( example - a paper towel tube could be made into a rain stick) -OR -bring in something they could reuse and tell us how they would reuse. (example - a baby toy - they would give to a younger cousin)

April Showers - 4/9 - 4/13
I hope you all had a Happy Easter and enjoyed the week off  even though Mother Nature did not cooperate!!

This week we will discuss why we need rain and how rainbows are formed.  We will also have water play observing if items sink or float.  We will be reviewing the alphabet sounds and the numbers 1-20.  Show and tell - have your child bring in something that relates to rain or water.

This week we will make Easter baskets, dye eggs and reflect on the true meaning of Easter.  Our letter of the week is Z.  We will be reviewing numbers 1-20.
Our Easter celebration will be on Wednesday.  Thank you to all who contributed eggs and/or contributed goodies for the eggs.  The children will have a fun time on their egg hunt!

Luck of the Irish 3/12 - 3/16
Last week certainly showed how March can come in like a lion!  Hope we are done with snow for the year!!

This week we will have fun with all that is green and Irish!  We will paint shamrocks, print with green peppers, have fun with leprechaun magic and learn about St. Patrick.  As I have told the children if they are good a leprechaun might come and visit.  Since we lost the time in January we will again do two letters this week - G and O.  Our number is 19.

Homework for all parents - please count to 100 with your child Best place to do this is in the car.  Thanks!

What's the Weather? 3/5 - 3/9
March is a month of Lion days (Winter weather) and Lamb days (Spring weather) - so this week we will investigate what makes the weather.  We will also be making decorations for our classroom for St. Patrick's Day.  Our letters of the week are Q and U because they are buddies.  Our number of the week is 18.

We continue to add to our Random Acts of Kindness Heart.  If your child performs an act of kindness please write it down and send it in.

I am looking for four volunteers to send items in for our Easter egg hunt. There must be enough items for 18 children and the items need to fit into a large plastic egg.  Please no candy. If you can help please let me know.

I hope you all enjoyed your winter break!!  At least we got a glimpse of Spring!!

Our Valentine's Day and 100th Day celebrations were a big success!! Thank you to all who contributed items for our parties.  Also, I am sure the children loved all their Valentine's Day goodies - I know I did - THANK YOU!!

This week we will be talking about how to keep our heart healthy.  This will include nutrition, exercise and our teeth.  We usher in a new month and on Friday we will celebrate Dr. Seuss by eating Green Eggs and Ham!!  All week we will be working on rhyming.  The letter of the week is K and the number is 17.

Random Acts of Kindness - Everyone should have received the information about these prior to our break.  Please make sure the acts are done during Lent and also on the day that you write about them.

Love is in the Air! - 2/5 - 2/9
Thank you for all the donations that were sent in last week for the various charities.  We had a great Catholic Schools Week!

'Love One Another' -  that is what we will be talking about this week.  Included with this will be a review of number words, review of the letters/sounds to date and making Valentine's for our family.  Letter of the week is L and the number is 15.

I have started testing the children on the letters to date. When this is done I will test on the numbers to date.  I am happy to report that 99% of the children know their birthdays and some also know their phone numbers.  Please continue to practice with your child at home.

Our Valentine's Day celebration will be Monday, 2/12 - Please have our child  send in a Valentine for each child in the class  We have 18 students.

Your child brought home a 100 Days of School sheet.  Please send in by Monday, 2/12 - we will celebrate the 100th day on Friday, 2/16.

The Five Senses/Catholic Schools Week 1/28 - 2/1
All week long we will be exploring our senses.  We will have taste tests, smelly bags, sight and hearing experiments and a texture scavenger hunt! We will be graphing all our responses to the tests and experiments.  At the end of the week we hope to see a cloudy day so the groundhog does not see his shadow - that means Spring is on it's way!  We will make predictions and on Friday see who was correct. Our letter of the week is E and the number is 14.

Animals in Cold Weather - 1/22 - 1/26
This week we will learn what animals do when the weather turns cold.  Do they hibernate, migrate or adapt?  We will also look at animals who always live in cold weather. On Friday we will go on a bear hunt! This week we will also be reviewing positional words. Letter of the week is N and the number is lucky 13.

Next Sunday, January 28th begins Catholic School Week .  Please join us at the 10:30am mass.  We have a week of activities planned for the school.  Check back next week for more details.

If you have not sent in a picture of your family please send in ASAP.

 

We are learning our birthdays.  When your child knows their birthday we will then begin to work with your child on their phone number.  When they learn their phone number we will work with them to learn their address.  Please practice all three of these things at home.

 The children are learning to write their last names.  Please practice at home.

 Flu season is in full swing!!!  Every morning I am reviewing with the class proper sneezing and coughing procedures. (Sneeze and cough into elbow).  I am also discussing the use of tissues instead of fingers for their nose.  Please review with your child at home.  The nurse has suggested that you revisit the Student Handbook for illness guidelines.  Also, please take a look at the handout I gave at orientation re illness.

 Some children are still having trouble putting on and zipping the jacket they are wearing to school.  Please practice at home.

Snow Much Fun!! 1/15 - 1/19

Thank you for all your patience and understanding last week while we got St. Leo's School ready to reopen.  On Friday the children came in and they were ready to learn!
This week we will do what had been planned for last week. We begin by talking about Martin Luther King. We will learn how snow is formed and we will be doing several experiments with ice.  The children will learn to cut a snowflake and will make snowmen from shaving cream and glue.  On Friday we will play with snow we have made and will also ice skate in the classroom.  Our letter of the week is Ii and the number is 12.  Please send in a picture of your family by Wednesday, 1/17.

School Closing

I hope that all of you are safe and warm and that you did not have any damage or troubles during the snow storm.  Unfortunately St. Leo's did have some flooding and we are all waiting for news of when we will reopen.  In the meantime you can work with your child at home - please have them practice writing their first and last names, the numbers 1-11 and the upper and lower case letters we have done to date -
Aa, Bb,Cc,Ff, Hh, Jj, Mm,Pp,Rr, Ss,Tt,Ww, Xx,and Yy.  If you would like to print these out for your child to trace you can go to handwritingworksheets.com.

Last week we began learning birthdays so please continue this with your child.  Also next week we are going to begin learning phone numbers.   Please begin to teach your child the number you would like them to learn.  I am emailing you all two sheets for your child to complete and bring to school when we are back in session.  If you did not receive my email please reach out to me at cpeterson@stleosschool.org.

Between reviewing our numbers and letters we have a lot going on this week.

Monday - Christmas Concert 9:00am - Children can dress in their best!!  I was told doors will open approximately 15 minutes before the show.  Children should arrive at school regular time.  If you are taking your child home after the concert they do not need to bring their backpack.  Also please let us know if you are taking them and you need to sign your child out at the front office.

Wednesday - 12/20 Pajama Day - We will be getting together with our church buddies and then having our Christmas party!

Thank you for all the gently used books.  We have a mountain of books to donate to the less fortunate.  This Wednesday, 12/13 is the last day I will be collecting.

As Christmas approaches we will finish our family gifts, make a Santa mask, letter and number match and on Friday make a nativity for our homes.  Our field trip is Thursday, 12/14.  Letter of the week is C and we will continue to review numbers 1-10.

It is Better to Give Than to Receive - 12/4 - 12/8

It was wonderful to see you all at conferences!

 Today, 12/3, is the first Sunday of Advent.  Please have your child place a flame on their wreath.

This week we will be learning through books and discussion that it is better to give than to receive.  With this in mind we will be making cards for a nursing home and making presents and cards for our family. We will continue to collect gently used books for those who do not have any.   On Friday we will attend mass for the Immaculate Conception.  Our letter of the week is M and we will review the numbers 1-10.

Getting Ready for Christmas 11/27 - 12/1
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!!
This week we will focus on getting our hearts ready for Baby Jesus by learning about Advent and making our Advent wreaths.  We will also discuss other things our families do to get ready for Christmas (baking, decorating)  The letter of the week is J.  We will start to learn the number words for 1-10.

For our class Advent project we will be collecting gently used children's books for WIC (Women Infants and Children) in Paterson.  If you have any books your child has out grown or is not interested in any more please send them in and your child will place them in our Advent basket.  Even though Advent begins next Sunday you may send in now.

This week we will sequence the story of Thanksgiving and review all our letters and numbers to date.  There is no show and tell.  On Wednesday we will join together with the other classes for our school wide Thanksgiving Feast.  If you  have not sent in a stuffing for the feast please do so tomorrow, 11/20.  Please send in a picture of your child by Monday, November 27th.  We will be using the picture for a Christmas project.

We Give Thanks 11/13-11/17
This week we will read about the first Thanksgiving and get ready for this special holiday.  We will be making cornucopias, Pilgrim and Native American attire and a special gift for our families. We will also be reviewing patterns.  The letter of the week is Tt and the number is ten.

The children did a terrific job on their Family Turkey Projects.  Each child stood in front of the class and told everyone what they were thankful for.  The turkeys will now be put in the hallway for all to enjoy.

We had a wonderful time on our trip to the Police Station.  A big thank you to Grace's dad, Mr. Mulligan for helping us arrange  the trip.  The children did a great job walking to the station.

Thank you for all the donations for the Food Drive.  Our class box was overflowing!

Our school wide Thanksgiving Feast will be on Wednesday, 11/22 -

If you have not sent in the permission slip along with $20 for the 12/14 field trip, please do so ASAP - thank you.

Please have your child practice putting on their coat. We are learning how to zip our jackets, please practice at home.  Thanks!

Barnyard Sounds/Thanksgiving 11/6 - 11/10

This week we will continue our lesson on barnyard animals and roll right into our Thanksgiving lesson.  Also during the week we will visit the Police Station (Wednesday) and also salute our Veterans (Friday).  Letter of the week is Y and the number is 9.  Please remember to send in the Turkey family project on Monday, 11/6.

Please send in the permission slip and $20 for our December field trip - thanks!

Our Halloween celebration was a big success!  Thank you to all who send in items for our party.  Also the children went home with a bag full of goodies - you all were very generous!!

St. Leo's School will be contributing by making baskets for a small tricky tray that will be at the event after 5:30 mass. We are asking that each student contribute a small donation of $2-$5 no later than this Friday, 11/03 so the items can be purchased and the baskets can be made in time.

Halloween/Barnyard Dance 10/30 -11/3

We start our week by celebrating Halloween. On Monday we will put our hands in monster brains (oatmeal) untangle spider webs (Easter grass) to find a spider (spider ring) and navigate eye balls (golf balls) to find a pumpkin sticker. We will also use ghost goop (shaving cream) to make ghosts. Our class celebration will be on Tuesday (please read below). On Wednesday we will be going to mass for All Saints Day. We end the week by starting our theme Barnyard Dance. Letter of the week is X and the number is 8. For show and tell your child can bring in an item that has a X in the word ( fox, box etc.)


Halloween Celebration

Our Halloween party will be on Tuesday 10/31. Your child can come dressed in their costume. Please plan on sending treats in for each child in the class - 18 children - as we will be Trick or Treating in class. Each child will hand out their treats to the other children.

The Halloween parade for the school is at 11:00am - all are invited to attend. You may take your child home after the parade. Please send a note if you plan to do this so we have your child packed up and ready to go. You will need to sign your child out at the front office - we will meet you there. Dismissal for all others is a 12 noon in back parking lot.


Now that the cold weather is coming please make sure your child's name is in all sweaters, sweat shirts and coats. Also please work with them on putting their coats on and zippering, buttoning and snapping. We are working on this in school.

The Haunted House - 10/23 - 10/27

Hoots and howls are coming from the Haunted House as we get ready for Halloween! We will learn how to sequence a story, write in our journals, make our Trick or Treat bags and sing and dance to Halloween music. Our letter of the week is H and the number is 7.

Things that go Bump in the Night- Real or Pretend

Bats, skeleton bones and brooms - with Halloween just two weeks away these are just a few of the fun things we will talk about and decide - are they real or are they pretend. Also this week we talk about fire safety and have a visit from the local fire department. Letter of the week is B and the number of the week is 6.

Student Council is sponsoring a COIN WAR ( coins or dollar bills) among all classes for the Hurricane relief fund for the month of October.  The class with the most money will win a treat - so send in your extra change!

The Pumpkin Patch - 10/10 - 10/13

How do pumpkins grow, do pumpkins sink or float, what does the inside of a pumpkin feel like- these will be just  3 of the questions we will answer as we examine pumpkins.  We will also use our 5 senses while doing our pumpkin science.  Letter of the week is Pp and the number of the week is 5.

Week of Respect - 10/2 - 10/6

Our class will join the join the rest of the school in learning and showing RESPECT!
In class we will be reading various books showing the children how to be kind to others and to show respect.  We will make Captain Kindness puppets, learn how to heal a broken heart and participate in a compliment circle.  This week we will also make bird feeders for our outdoor friends to celebrate St. Francis.  On Thursday we will talk about the explorer Christopher Columbus.  Our letter of the week is R and the number of the week is 4. 

If your family has a pet please remember to send in a picture for our St. Francis bulletin board.

During  the week students will participate in events dedicated to Respect for their School, their Peers and their Community.

Fall into Autumn - 9/25 - 9/29

As the leaves change color and the weather gets cooler, we know Fall is here!  We will learn why leaves change color and and we will explore our Fall science table.  At the week of the week we will take a nature walk.  The letter of the week is F and the number of the week is 3.

Picture day is Wednesday, 9/27.  Students should be in full uniform.

If your child has a pet please send in a picture ASAP - they will be displayed on the front bulletin board for the Feast of St. Francis.

Join us for our 2nd Annual Parent Night out Friday, September 22nd

 It’s going to be a great night AGAIN​! There is NO​ charge, NO​ fundraising. Just a chance for all of us to get together, get to know one another, have LOTS of fun, and make great memories. We are providing the music, and the location. All you have to do is bring food, drinks, and even a friend or two! It’s that easy! The fun begins at 7:30pm in St. Leo’s School Gym~ See you then! The Four Seasons - 9/18 - 9/22

This week we will learn why the season's change and what makes the weather rearrange.  We will have a seasonal scavenger hunt, make seasonal shapes and sign different seasonal songs. This week we will also review shapes.  Our letter of the week is S and the number of the week is 2.

Please continue to have your child practice writing their name.

Picture Day for our class is Friday, 9/22.  All children should be in full uniform  Forms were sent out on Friday and need to be returned.

If you are interested in attending a Protecting God's Children Workshop, St Leo's will be hosting one on Sunday, 9/24.  Flyers were sent out last week.
